EML Retail Display took a stand at the Hertfordshire EXPO at Knebworth Barns yesterday. This is an exhibition for local businesses of all types so buyers and sellers alike. What is unique is that it is run by, attended by and visited by all business people within the county of Hertfordshire and is the largest exhibition of its' type in the UK. It was very busy and lots of interest shown in our company and the products we have on offer.The guest speaker Dave Fishwick (Bank of Dave TV entrepreneur) and the local Stevenage MP Stephen McPartland also created an air of importance at the event.

Christmas is coming - don't fight it!

We see today the release of the latest M&S christmas advert which for us always signals the beginning of the season.

M&S have the decency to wait until November before releasing this unlike other retailers who seem intent on hitting the airways in August or September to bring forward the spend.

As with most retailers Christmas can be make or break the profits and i note with interest that M&S released figures this week only turning in £260 million pounds profit, last year it was £280 million pounds profit.

two things occur to me here, firstly for any company to make a profit of any sort in this global economic crisis should be celebrated, secondly the management at M&S are actively investing in many new projects and store refurbishments allowing many other companies to survive and in some cases thrive as a result.

Now Primark is flying away with record sales, however history tells us this is a good time for discount retailers and as soon as the green shoots begin to re emerge their sales will level or reduce. It also has to be said that aggression of companies like Primark leave very little space for ethical trading  which is a short term view in anyones book!

Bank Holiday rambling

As we approach the end of the summer and the rugby season beckons forth our thoughts in retail display look towards the pre seasonal peak getting our clients ready for christmas.

as avid supporters of independent retail we are considering offering free display advice to ensure that boutiques all over the country are prepared for the forthcoming peak season when many stores make the profit to see them through the tougher times in the retail calendar

Show and Sell – Its not a dark art!

Having worked in retail display for over 20 years it never ceases to amaze me how retailers present products and services, I am not just talking here about independents some corporates place little or no value on display and visual merchandising.

As a retailer I implore you to look at your store as a buyer walking in fresh from the high street, what do they see? Is it a clearly defined offer, do you have high level display to draw your customers further into your store to look at higher margin product? Is your product facing the customer ready for them to easily touch and feel? You can then “show and Sell”

All of these things are basics that each of us like when we shop and it is important we look at our own housekeeping to make sure we maximize the buying experience of each of our customers which will in turn maximize their spend and maximize your profits!

Don’t get me wrong you have to keep your display relevant to the product or service you are selling, to attract the buyers and customers you want, if you have a discount store and you are selling on the lowest price proposition then there is no commercial reason to display these items on “Gucci” display stands it will switch customers off.

Decide on your proposition and work to it, create the atmosphere for your customers that they expect.

Make the buying experience good for them and a happy time they will come back and tell their friends to come to you!

Holiday Blog

AS the holiday season is now fully in the swing and we have returned from our Staycation in the UK this year its nice to see the London streets buzzing with the tourist trade and hopefully retail are selling through all the stock for the Autumn winter collections now out in the stores.

This business we call "POP" tends to take us a season out of kilter each time, here we are enjoying some good summer weather and all we are doing is looking at delivering displays for the peak trade of Christmas starting end of september running through to January!

We ensure we have stock levels available for all main line products for call off and continue building the designs for the bespoke manufactured displays.......it really is a balancing act of trade which is affected by the climate!

The question in the offices today is can men wear shorts in the office on days like today when the mercury pushes 30!

arguments have ranged from ladies allowed to wear short skirts to what about if a scotsman wears a kilt!

The truth of the matter is surely if its comfortable and smart and what our customers expect to see then its not an issue!

musings of a Thursday

It occurs to me this morning that with civil unrest and economic slow down being reported around the world that it is very easy to get caught up in negativity and the day to day things we have to do which we dont enjoy doing

we fail to focus on the things we enjoy and celebrate the successes we achieve on a day to day basis

Wednesday was a day of success for EML, we successfully completed a roll out of our Dump Bin known as probin into Halfords stores throughout the UK, this is big our products are being used and showcased in every one of halfords stores, the probin was chosen against a range of other products available on the market, some cheaper but not as good, some more expensive but the probin ticked every box that the client was looking for.

On top of this Staples ordered a tranche of display hooks, 50,000 in fact which is a great order and one that really helps our order book this month, display hooks, clip strips, leaflet holders are all core products for eml express and its great to know that our team are out there selling these items and solving big name retailers display problems.......thats what success is all about, sometimes the road can be bumpy but the end product is exactly what is required and is a positive experience, we must take time to celebrate this and the hard work the team put into getting there!
